If you already own UPS’s, use the
following guidelines to ensure that your equipment is connected
properly and your UPS battery is functioning correctly:
To begin with, it is highly
recommended that the UPS be plugged directly into a wall socket (and
not a power strip). Ensure that your PC is properly connected to the
UPS. Many UPS models have multiple A/C outlets with only a portion
of them supported by the battery up-time. For instance your UPS may
have a total of four outlets and two of those are supported by the
battery. Your CPU and your monitor would be the two devices you
would want to plug into the battery supported outlets. It is also
strongly recommended that your power protection unit have modem and
network protection. Most lightning and surge damage occurs through
phone and/or network lines. Check your UPS’s users guide or call
BizTech for assistance.
After you’ve ensured your system is
properly connected to the UPS, with the system running, unplug the UPS
from the wall power outlet. The UPS alarm should sound but your
system should continue to function. Depending on the model of UPS
and the age of the battery, you should have ample time to shut the
system down normally. Shut the system down and then reconnect the
UPS to the power outlet. (DO NOT perform this self-test on a UPS
protecting any type of server. Call BizTech Computer Systems to
assist you in testing your server UPS.)
In some cases, you may have automated
shut-down software installed which will shut your system down for
you in case of a power outage. Observe your system and ensure that
the UPS battery keeps your system up long enough for the software to
shut it down.
